| LC | 1826 | 7 | 26 | NPS | PENNEFATHER | Richard | Baron (Judge) | Tralee Assizes Child Murder Ann ROCHE, an old woman, of very advanced age, was indicted for the murder of Michael LEAHY, a young child by drowning him in the Fleak. This case, which at ... assumed a very serious aspect, from the meaning imported to words spoken by the prisoner, "that the sin of the child's death was on the grand-mother, and not on the prisoner, and not on the prisoner," turned out to be a homicide committed under the delusion of the grossest superstition. The child, the four year old, could neither stand, walk, or speakwas thought to be Fairy struckand the grand-mother ordered the prisoner and one of the witnesses, Mary CLIFFORD, to bathe the child every morning, in that pool of the river Fleak, where the boundaries of three farms met; they had so bathed it for three mornings, and on the last morning the prisoner kept the child longer under the water than usual, when her companion (the witness, Mary CLIFFORD) said to the prisoner, "how can you hope to see God after this," to which the prisoner replied "that the sin was on the grand-mother and not on her." Upon cross examination, the witness said it was not done with the intent to kill the child, but to cure itto get the Fairy out of it The Policeman, who apprehended her, on charging her with drowning the child, she said it was no matter as it had died four years ago. Baron PENNEFATHER said, though it was a case of suspicion, and required to be thoroughly examined into, yet the Jury would not be safe in convicting the prisoner of murder, however strong the suspicion might be. VerdictNot Guilty In this case, Counsel for the Crown prosecuted. The prisoner was defended by Messrs. O'CONNELL and H. WALSHE. |

| LC | 1826 | 6 | 17 | NPS | PERY | Lord Glentworth | Mallow Election commenced on Thursday with unexpected bustle, and the Sessions-House was crowded. C. D. O. Jephson, Esq was proposed by John D. Croker, Esq. and seconded by Noble Seward, Esq. Lord Glentworth was put in nomination in a person named Bucke, and another 40s. freeholder, amidst the most discordant hisses from the friends of Mr. Jephson, who were by far the more numerous. Mr. Jephson stated his claims to the electors, and avowed himself an advocate of liberal principles. Mr. M. Barrington attempted to address the people on the put of Lord Glentworth, but was interrupted and prevented speaking. Counselor Franks considered it extraordinary that the paid agent of Lord Glentworth should presume to address the populace in the character of his Lordship's representative, especially as he was not a freeholder. Mr. Barrington made an effort to reply; he was hard to say he was equal to the last Gentleman in property, family, and connexion, but desisted from the uproar that prevailed. The polling commenced shortly after, and Lord Glentworth had a majority of three at the conclusion. In the evening, Mr. Spring Race and his brother-in-law, Sir Aubrey Hunt. Bart. arrived in Mallow, to assist the election of Lord Wentworth. At the conclusion of the poll on Thursday, the numbers were, for Mr. Jephson, 25 ; Lord Glentworth, 18majority, 7. Yesterday, Lord Glentworth's fiends gave up the contest, and Mr. Jephson retired with a majority of two votes over his opponent. Mr Jephson was then declared duly elected. | |

The unequivocal marks of popular feeling, which evinced with more than usual fervour on this occasion, were highly gratifying to all ranks. As eldest son to one of the most popular noblemen in this country, and as one whose future possessions entitle him to first honours in it, we cannot but congradulate the inhabitants of Bruff on the event which thus elicited from them the warmest demonstrations of respect and admiration, as equally a pledge of the future happiness with which he will be welcomed whenever he becomes a resident amongst the the Earl of Limerick's tenantry. |
