MONT DELANCEY - JULY 2002

 Return to home

Mont Delancey this year was an infantry tactics battle display with several individual unit displays of particular aspects of the Napoleonic military craft. The event is to celebrate Bastille Day and the connection of the Delancey family with France.

The event was held over two days. 95th members from NSW as well as around Victoria participated - our numbers look smaller than usual as some of our members added to Frech numbers for the day. Friday afternoon and Saturday included set-up of a period camp as well as several walk-throughs of the battle planned for Sunday. The camp site was particularly pleasant, with the adjacent blacksmith shop providing a welcome evening shelter with a great fire.

The French 21eme Regiment was true to form, and managed to cook up an excellent meal for Saturday night.

The Battle - about 30 minutes of attack, counter-attack, charge and counter-charge

Our trusty sergeant issues orders - French camp; loot; go!
The 95th leaps into action skirmishing up the hill
Hmm - there are more French than we expected
Luckily, we have some supports (also eager for loot)
So we press on in the face of tough opposition

The 42nd and French 21eme regiments trade volleys while the 95th skirmishes to the flank
The 42nd are force to retire after heavy casualties (it was Bastille Day after all)
The troops of the 21eme, 42nd Regt and 95th Regt line up after the battle for a volley salute to the crowd

Around the camp
Rfn Lon and the combined camp (blacksmith forge in the background)
Catherine and Chosen Man Jeff ---- Claire and Rfn David
Rfn David - 42nd pioneer Tony explaining equipment to visitors. Tree planting with French Honour Guard (Riflemen George and Adrian doubled as 21eme Regt for the day). Tree planting group included French diplomats and members of the Delancey family
The 95th demonstrating drill and skirmishing during the morning. Our sergeant puts the troop through its paces while one of us explains to the crowd what is actually happening.
Skirmish pairs (files) shown here - riflemen on the left file are exchanging position after the front man fired. Others are loading or waiting for their file partners to load. Note drifting smoke from just a small group firing slowly.
